Debt collection in Dubai and the UAE: agency or AI agent?

Many UAE businesses keep early arrears in house and send accounts that have gone quiet to a debt collection agency. An AI agent can now hold those early conversations in Arabic and English, by phone call and WhatsApp message, while the customer is still answering. The agency keeps in-person visits, legal follow-up, tracing and the oldest accounts.

01

Who handles debt collection in the UAE today?

Usually more than one team for the same portfolio. Banks and large lenders run their own collections departments for early arrears, meaning payments that are days or weeks late, and pass older accounts to collection agencies. Smaller businesses, from distributors to clinics to schools, usually chase invoices themselves first and then hand them to an agency or a law firm that offers debt recovery.

The agencies range from international credit firms with Gulf offices to small local specialists, and a debt collection company in Dubai often works for banks and businesses alike. The question for a UAE business is usually not whether to use an agency but when an account should move to one.

02

What does a debt collection agency in Dubai actually do?

The visible part is the same as anywhere: calls, messages and letters to the customer, a payment plan negotiated with them, and regular reports to the client. What sets UAE agencies apart is the reach a business rarely has on its own. Some offer in-person visits to a customer's office or home. Many work with law firms when an account needs to go further. And the established ones trace customers who have changed numbers, employers or addresses, what the trade calls skip tracing.

Most are paid a commission on what they recover, and the rate depends mainly on how long the accounts have been unpaid and whether court action is needed, sometimes with fixed fees for legal work on top. Ask each agency for its rate on accounts like yours, grouped by how long they have been unpaid, before comparing them.

In a country where customers can leave, the cheapest collection is the one that happens before they do.

What makes collecting debts in the UAE different?

The first difference is mobility. Most UAE residents are expatriates, many on residence visas sponsored by their employer, and some move on, often after a job change, before an account is settled. An account that is simple to agree by phone while the customer is in Dubai is harder to recover once they have left, because it then needs an agency or lawyer abroad. That puts more weight on the first weeks of arrears than in markets where customers rarely move abroad.

The second is language. A portfolio of consumer accounts in the UAE will include customers who are most comfortable in Arabic or English, and many who would rather speak Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog, Malayalam or Bengali. A conversation about money goes better in the customer's own language, and few in-house teams can cover all of them, so ask any agency which languages its collectors actually speak.

The third is timing and channel. The UAE weekend moved to Saturday and Sunday in 2022, with Friday a half day in the public sector and at some companies, and working days are shorter during Ramadan, so plan the hours of contact around both. WhatsApp is the everyday messaging app for most residents, which makes it a natural place for a written reminder, sent to customers who have agreed to be contacted there.

Where does an AI agent fit before an agency?

An AI agent is software that holds the collections conversation itself, by voice or message, within limits you set. In the UAE its natural place is the first weeks of arrears, while the customer is still in the country and still answering. It can try every new account within days, in Arabic or English, by phone call or WhatsApp message, and agree a new date or a short plan inside your rules. An early miss is often a small problem, such as a late salary or a changed card, and that is the kind of conversation an agent can settle.

It doesn't replace what an agency is for. A customer who has stopped answering on every channel, or has left the country, needs tracing and reach the business can't supply. Languages beyond Arabic and English need checking with each vendor; where the agent doesn't cover them natively, those customers are better served by your own team or the agency. And disputes or a customer in financial difficulty belong with a person on your own team who can look at the case.

What does early contact change in numbers?

Here is an illustration; every figure is an assumption to replace with your own. A consumer lender in Dubai sees 1,000 accounts a month fall into arrears, averaging 5,000 dirhams each, 5 million dirhams in all. Today it sends them all to an agency after 30 days. The agency recovers 40 percent and keeps a 20 percent commission: 2 million dirhams recovered, 400,000 in commission.

Now suppose the lender contacts every account itself in the first days, and 300 of them pay in full or keep to a plan before day 30, bringing in 1.5 million dirhams with no commission. The 700 still unresolved go to the agency. They are the harder accounts, so assume its recovery rate on them falls to 30 percent: 1.05 million recovered, 210,000 in commission.

The firm saving is the commission: 190,000 dirhams a month less, before the cost of the early contact itself. Total recovery comes to about 2.55 million in this example, but only if those 300 customers would not have paid the agency anyway. That is the figure to measure in a pilot, by comparing accounts contacted early with accounts that went straight to the agency.

06

What should a UAE business ask before choosing either?

Of an agency offering debt collection services: which emirates it covers in person and how its visits are conducted, which languages its collectors speak, how it traces customers who have left the country, and how it reports each account back to you. Of an AI agent: which of your customers' languages it speaks natively rather than through translation, and whether it sends WhatsApp messages as well as making calls. The wider list of questions for any AI collections vendor applies here too.

If you use both, decide the handover in advance: how many days without a response before an account moves to the agency, and how the agency receives what the customer has already been told, so the customer doesn't hear the same thing twice.

Common questions

How do debt collection agencies in Dubai charge?

Mostly by commission on what they recover. The rate depends mainly on how long the accounts have been unpaid and whether court action is needed, and legal work is sometimes charged as a fixed fee on top. Ask for a rate on accounts like yours before comparing agencies.

Can you collect a debt from someone who has left the UAE?

Sometimes, through agencies with partners in the customer's new country, but it is slower and needs an agency or lawyer abroad.

What does a debt collection agency in Dubai do?

It contacts customers by phone, message and letter, negotiates payment plans and reports back to you. Many also offer in-person visits, legal follow-up through partner law firms and tracing of customers who have changed number, employer or country.

What languages do you need for debt collection in the UAE?

Arabic and English at a minimum, and for consumer accounts often Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog, Malayalam or Bengali as well. Customers usually find it easier to agree a plan in their own language, so check which languages a team, agency or AI agent covers natively.
